Can anyone please explain how wireless routers work?

Hey I’m thinking of getting an Xbox soon and I will want to be on Xbox live but to do this I’m told I need a wireless router so can anyone explain what one is and how it works? Does my computer need to be turned on for it to work?

As you can guess I’m pretty crap at computers. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Where could I possibly Get a Black wireless networking adapter and a red chat pad for the Xbox 360 ?

Can I connect to Xbox Live with ONLY a laptop and the wireless networking adapter?

How do i turn on a wireless networking device?
