thirtysomething asked:

I need to set up a home network to link my 2 desktops and 2 laptops so that I can share files, printers etc. Here is the problem: I do not have a single A: drive that can use floppy discs. I truly believed that technology had fallen by the wayside.
The wizard on XP only recognizes floppies as removable media, so, a cdr or jumpdrive will not suffice.

Here is what I am working with:
2 desktops running XP Home
1 laptop running XP Home
1 laptop running Vists Prem Home

I know all of my network hardware works, I have used this feature before, but I did some reformatting, and found that the ONE A: drive I have no longer works.

If this is not something simple that I have just never dealt with, I will be surprised.

Also, I have searched google, and read forums, and all that, so please do not post an ambiguous link. I appreciate everyone’s help, but I am not helped by a link to a page that I have to read a book about.

If you have a good answer on this I would really appreciate your help.
I answered my own question…go to a friend’s house and use their computer. Load the settings from the Network Setup Wizard on to your floppy. Leave the floppy in the A drive. Copy the “netsetup” onto a flash drive. Go home. Install “netsetup” on you computers, but change the network name. Voila! It works again!

Best Firewall for Your Laptop

Victor Pradel asked:

While you are thinking anything for you laptop you must be highly sensitive towards it. Being the most sophisticated machine any minor harm can lead to a big trouble for you. And if it is out of warranty period then it is gone. So always keep a good eye on your laptop. Now having the best firewall especially for you laptop is a tough one to be carried about. As being the portable machines it comes in the interference of many networks and depending upon your usage you always try to change the network so in order to have a full protection from the hacker as well as much harmful script which comes to your laptop while being online one must have a good firewall installed on your Laptop. So be very careful while you are using different networks to connect yourself to the internet.

The other thing you can do is to have a nice firewall installed on your Laptop which continuously monitors your outgoing and incoming packets on the network and warns you for every suspicious bit transferred from your laptop in or out of the system. There are many of them available from freeware to shareware. The most popular among the Freeware category is the Comodo Firewall which has the largest efficiency of blocking all the suspicious traffic from the system.

In fact many of the freeware as we know are buggy but Comodo has excelled for those. Also many of the Antivirus software also come with firewall preinstalled in them but they are not very much efficient enough to stop the suspicious script. So always try to have a good Firewall along with good Antivirus software installed on your Laptop so as to make your Laptop free from any hacker attack.

I have a Linksys router and my laptop has Vista Home Premium.

Do I change the network security key (I know the old one) through Vista’s Network and Sharing Center, or through the router itself…or both?

Thanks in advance.
Brad, thanks, yes I’m using WPA encryption. So, the router is the boss, in essence?

The thing is, I want to be able to play the Sims 3 on my little Aspire One netbook. I am pretty positive it won’t be powerful enough to have it installed, but how does wireless networking work? If I install the game on my more powerful desktop computer, can I set up a network and play it through my laptop??

This might be a very dumb question – I really have no idea when it comes to computers!
