All you have to do in plug you internet DSL/Cable modem into your wireless router and then go from there. you can still use a PC and such with it. It will not affect your internet speeds and such unless you have a bunch of computers plugged into it.

You have a Computer + Modem, the modem is the internet. and the internet is going to your computer. With a router, the router takes the internet and lets your other computer have some, your laptop.

A router allows the internet to go to more then one computer.

to many security issues with everything going over the airways.
i went with cable style and am networking 3 pc’s on dsl with no slow down in performance.

wireless is meant to be used for laptops…if you don’t have one…go cable.

Most of the home users have no static ip’s …so ip address is alloted to them by their ISP. IP is nothing but a set of numbers that recognizes ur computer on the internet. It is somthing similar to ur home address. NOW theoritically u can connect only one computer to the network if u have a single ip. But if u want to connect more than one computer….thats where the router comes in.

NOW the normal setup wouldbe ….phone line connected to the filters….filters connected to the DSL modem(& phone)…DSL modem connected to the Wireless router….and the computers connected to the router wirelessly.

When u have a router then the modem goes into bridge mode. it just modulates and demodulates the data. The router is configured to get u connected to the internet…so u have to put in all the userid’s and passwords in the memory page of the router. Once u save the userid and password in the router…the router will try to get the ip address from the ISP server. Once the router gets the ip address…the router is connected to the internet.

Now u’ll also have to configure the laptops and pc’s to get the wireless connection from the router….this is nothing but a virtual or wireless connection between the router and the computers. Once this connection is created….u’ll be automatically online.

SECURITY NOTE: ONCE U SETUP THE ROUTER MAKE SURE TO CREATE A WEP KEY(ENCRYPTION KEY). SINCE UR WIRELESS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN UR NEIGHBOURHOOD…SOMEONE WITH A WIRELESS PC CAN ACCESS UR ROUTER DO SOMETHING UNDESIREABLE. SO THIS WEP KEY WHICH ONLY U’LL KNOW…WILL PROTECT UR ROUTER OR UR INTERNET CONNECTION BEING MISUSED.

marcos does a nice job explaining with one exception; for security, use wpa encryption: wep is badly broken.
